The Godfather & Taormina

Code: JMES002

One of Joe Banana's private drivers will meet you at the port of Messina. He will stand right in front of the gangway of your cruise ship holding a sign with your name on it.

Enjoy an introduction to the real Sicily exploring the charming towns of Savoca and Forza D'Agrò with your local expert driver/guide who so proudly calls these areas home.

Starting from the port, the first stop on this shore excursion will be Castelmola, the medieval hill town above Taormina with breathtaking views of the sea and Mt. Etna. Then drive to the art town of Savoca and it will be like taking a step back in time.

Although recorded with its present name in 1415, the town probably dates from the first half of the 12th century when a Norman Fortress was built. Savoca is not a tourist town, it is a simple every day "local" town set in the foothills of the S. Peloritiani.

What makes Savoca different from the other towns? This is where Al Pacino and cast shot the GodFather Film. Following their footsteps and visiting the places that were so often shown throughout the movie will bring back many memories. While in town, you must stop for a Lemon Granita at the famous bar "VITELLI" on the corner of the town, as it was one of Coppola's favorite spots, and seen many times throughout the film. Then make your way to the church of St. Lucy where the scene of the wedding between Apollonia and Michael was shot!

From Savoca we will visit Forza d'Agrò which is without a doubt one of the best examples of a typical village of the Province of Messina. Forza d’Agro still conserves its medieval street layout and on all sides of the town you have the most incredible views. Here we have a compilation of tradition, culture, history, and art all waiting for you.

The last stop during this shore excursion will be in Taormina, to see the highlights of the area. You will be in awe as you arrive in this spectacular town, situated on a rocky plateau on the slopes of the steep Monte Tauro, dominating the Ionian coast from Capo Sant'Andrea to Capo Taormina with Mt. Etna rising majestically in the background.

The downtown centre represents a variety of historical periods, from the early Greek settlements and the Roman age, to the remains of Byzantine and Medieval constructions up to the 15th Century Catalan buildings and 17th Century Baroque churches and palaces.  You cannot miss a visit to the Greek Theatre, and a stroll down the main street "Corso Umberto" with its art and designer shops, Baroque churches and Palazzi. Your driver/guide will then point out some excellent lunch spots for you to enjoy a bite to eat.

After some time at leisure your private driver will take you back to Messina port where you can board your ship.
