One of Joe Banana's English speaking drivers will meet you at the port of Sorrento. He will be holding a sign with your name on it.
This shore excursion will begin with a drive by the famous Sorrento Coast. After about a 45 minute drive, we'll arrive at the ruins of Pompeii, the first stop on this breathtaking shore excursion! Pompeii was part of an ancient Roman city destroyed and buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
The remainder of the uncovered city is buried under the new Pompeii rebuilt many years after the eruption. In Pompeii you will have the opportunity to tour one of the most important archeological sites in the world! Archeological excavations are open to the public between the hours of 8:30 and 18:30 every day of the week. You can explore the site on your own or we can arrange for two hour tour with a professionally licensed and local guide (additional cost). However you choose to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will be in awe as you see the remnants of this 1st century city which offer some insight into the Roman life that came to a premature stop here on 24 August A.D. 79.
We'll drive by Sorrento and Amalfi Coasts where we can have a couple stops to get beautiful pictures. The coastal road runs through Positano and the fishing villages of Praiano, Furore, Conca dei Marini, continuing until it finally reaches the busy square of Amalfi (Piazza del Duomo) which is situated on the seafront.
In front of the port of Amalfi, there is the one and only bus station along the coast and the shopping area lies just behind this. If you would like to steep yourself in Amalfi's history there are some interesting sights to explore. Two of the most spectacular are the cathedral situated along the coast and the paper mill museum. Behind this square lies the main shopping street of Amalfi, that terminates at the furthest and highest point of the town. Along the pedestrian street are various bars and cafés, not to mention the many shops selling limoncello, casual clothing, swimwear, gifts, basic groceries, and of course, ceramics.
Your driver will be happy to suggest a location for here lunch based on your preferences.
After your time in the town of Amalfi, we will get back on the coastal road, and after about 45 minutes we will find ourselves driving down-hill directly through Positano. We will descend down the winding one-way road, passing by many picturesque houses and shops, and ultimately arrive in the heart of the town, at “Piazza dei Mulini”. This is the last point accessible by car, so we will park our car and walk downtown where all the streets lead to the waterfront.
Here we can have about one hour or more to discover this beautiful village denominated “The Jewel of The Amalfi Coast”.
Positano has beautiful things to see: the cathedral, ceramic shops, lemons, hand-made shoes and, of course, “Positano fashion”.
After this, our last site of the day, we will drive back to the ship where you can reminisce about your incredible day mixed with ancient Roman history and the present day beauty of one of the most famous coastlines in the world!
If we start our tour at 8:00/8:30 am we'll be back to the port by 5:00/5:30 pm.
